The four windows that form the heart of FCP are the Canvas, Browser, Viewer, and Timeline.

The Canvas allows you to playback edited sequences as you create them.

To capture video and audio media files on FCP you need to use the log and capture window.

If the timecode you capture doesn’t match the timecode on your video deck, you need to set a timecode offset .

The Timeline displays your edited sequence as clips arrayed on multiple video and audio tracks.

Editing with compressed audio will cause FCP to lose sync and it could cause a crash. MP3 is compressed audio.

Input

Logging is the process of reviewing your source videotapes, labeling and marking the In and out points of usable clips.

Where does an imported file go when you use it in your FCP project?
It goes to the browser and hardrive, not your project file. You must save it into your project file yourself.

The batch list is a log containing info that pulls clips from the source tape to the batch capture.

Logging is the term and option used for reviewing your source, labeling and marking all of the in and out points.

The port FCP uses most often to import DV is Firewire.

Labeling in and out points on a source tape is Logging.

Clips

The browser is used to access your clips, access your audio, organize your project.

What happens when you delete a clip from a bin in your project?
The clip is cut from the project, but original file on disk remains intact.

Which window do you select when picking a clip? Browser

Which window is the bin located in? Browser

When you apply special effects and perform edits on clips, you are not affecting the media file on disk.

Which key should you hold down when you drag a Browser item you want to copy? Option

How does one select an item in the browser?
Click the item.
Use the arrow keys to step through the item list..
Use Tab or Shift-Tab to move between items in an alphabetical order.
Type the first few letters of the item you are looking for.

The Autosave functon will save a copy of your project including all changes

An offline clip is a placeholder clip referencing media not currently on the hard drive.

Final Cut Pro initially hides some browser columns by default. True

In a browser column, what function is selected and used for logging information? Reel

Within the Browser, a reference point in a clip is called a Marker.

What control lets you move one frame at a time? Jog

Under what menu can you choose different backgrounds in Final Cut Pro? View

Audio volume is controled by what slider? Level

When opening a Clip, which window does it appear in? Viewer

What key should you press to play a clip in the Viewer? Space

The audio consists of both channels from the tape mixed into a single track. Mono Mix

Shorter clips you can make from a long master clip are called subclips.

To find lost windows or to optimize workspace. Select "arrange small"

You can mark in points by pressing the letter i.

Editing

What is a sequence? An edited assembly of video and audio clips.

What is a Superimpose edit? The source clip is placed on a new track above the target track.

Which shows what the actual sequence looks like? Canvas

What keys do you use to jump from an edit point to the next edit point? Up, Down arrows

What puts a source clip into a sequence by pushing back that part of the sequence that's past the sequence In point? Insert edit

In which edit is the source clip placed on a new track above the target track starting at the sequence In point? Superimpose edit

Where are the target track controls located? On the left of the Timeline

Which is the default edit type? Overwrite

A Sequence is a edited assembly of audio and video clips.

In a Superimpose edit the source clip is placed on a new track above the target track starting at the sequence in point.

An Insert edit puts a source clip into a sequence by pushing back the part of the sequence that's past the sequence in point.

What kind of edit adjusts the location of an edit point shared by two clips? Roll

The Ripple trim edit adjusts the length of one clip in a sequence by changing either the In or the out point of that clip.

A slide edit moves a single clip in relation to those before or after it so that they are changed but the duration of the moved clip is not.

Trim edits are performed in the timeline.

Transitions

You can save a transition you really like by dragging it to your favorites folder on the Effects tab in the Browser.

What button would you push to step through a transition one frame at a time? Right Arrow key

Transitions are not placed on the video and are not effective until rendered.

Rendering

Rendering is a process of combining your raw clip media with other adjustments to produce a new file.

Draft allows you to render with half the frame rate and half the resolution.

Most Final Cut Pro sequences (containing transitions, motion, and filters) need to be rendered before they can be played in real time.

Still art does NOT need to be rendered.

Composted layers, effects, transitions need to be rendered.

The best way to ensure a file format is readable by another program or device is to export it.

Managing Projects

Media mover copies a sequence and its associated media files to a different disk location without breaking any links between a sequence and the media source files it refers to.

If you accidently break the link between a project, sequence or clip and its underlying media files, you can reconnect them by using Relink Media.

After you completed a sequence and printed it to tape, make sure to save your project that contains the final version of your sequence.

One gigabyte of disk space is needed to store 5 minutes of full-resolution DV.

If you delete a clip from the browser bin you can re-import the file to relink it.

If you move a media file in your project from it's original location you would need to use the relink media command.

Media mover can copy one sequence at a time.

FCP is a nondestructive editing, nonlinear editing system.

Compositing and Special Effects

Drop Shadow adds the illusion of dimensional depth to the 2D television screen.

Layering is an arrangement of multiple clips of one point in time, each in its own track. (Pg.418)

Whenever you create motion paths, change filters over time, sculpt audio levels, or just fade to black, you need to use keyframes.

Distort changes the shape of the clip by adjusting its corners.

Opacity refers to a clip's level of transparency.

Wireframe mode represents the selected clip as a simple rectangle on a black background.

The motion blur effect enhances the illusion of movement by composting the images of adjacent forms.

The image+wireframe mode allows you to both see your clip and edit its size/position.

Changing the size of a clip is known as scaling.

Generators are a class of effects that create new video information, rather than modify existing video.

Any process that combines two or more image layers to create an effect is called compositing.

FCP effect features browser Effects tab.

Crop removes a portion of the clip from the side you specify.
